John Cooper Clarke Journeys from Manchester to the Moroccan: It felt like all of L.A.’s English residents were at the Moroccan Lounge on Saturday evening to see the Bard of Salford himself, Dr. John Cooper Clarke. The punk poet with the wild hair and wilder tongue released a string of visceral, hilarious albums in the late ’70s and ’80s — stories of northern English life told by a normal English man with a gift for weaving gold out of grit. It’s that raw honestly blended with an acerbic wit that made him so attractive to the punk rock crowd. Guitars or not (and he has been backed by musicians before, including Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks), Clarke’s spirit is all punk.Dr. Clarke’s stories are relatable to working class people from pretty much anywhere, but his delivery, his style, his entire fucking demeanor, is so Manchester that you wonder how much sense the non-Brits in attendance make of it. Apparently, the mental translation isn’t...City of Hayward identifies officers who fired guns in fatal police shooting

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office still was working to notify his next of kin, according to authorities.Hayward police acting Chief Bryan Matthews said during a press conference on Sept. 7 that Robinson and Espino each had about five years of experience with the department. He also said that the officers were wearing body-worn cameras when the shooting happened.Authorities have not released footage caught on the cameras.According to Matthews, witnesses told police that...Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie enters race for San Francisco mayor

By Biz Carson | BloombergDaniel Lurie, an heir to the Levi Strauss family fortune, is running for mayor of San Francisco next year.Lurie, a local philanthropist and founder of an anti-poverty charity, will challenge incumbent London Breed in a pivotal election for a city battling multiple challenges, from downtown business closures, to homelessness and drug use on the streets, and a surge in robberies.“We are facing a crisis of leadership, and the direction that we are headed leaves me deeply concerned that the next generation will not love San Francisco as we do,” Lurie, a Democrat, said in a statement announcing his candidacy on Tuesday. “This moment demands a new era of leadership from the outside.”Lurie’s bid is an unusual move in a city where many mayors have risen through the political ranks and used the office as a stepping stone to higher positions, such as Senator Dianne Feinstein and California Governor Gavin Newsom. The job fair was organized in Saint-Denis, a northern suburb of the French capital, on the future site of the Olympic village. Jobseekers can also apply via a specific website. “There are many opportunities globally in France, for Paris 2024 and beyond, because definitely there are also some jobs that will have for sure a second life after the Olympics,” said Tony Estanguet, the organizing committee president for Paris 2024.“We will welcome the world in 300 days. The share of Latinos who give to established charities has dropped sharply since 2008, a new study has found. The same has been true for other Americans, but the percentage of Hispanics who give to help people in need through less formal efforts is higher than for others in the United States. Those findings come from a study released last week by Hispanics in Philanthropy, an organization that works to advance Latino giving, and the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. The report found that 26% of Latinos gave in 2018, the most recent data available, compared with 44% in 2008. The share of all Americans who give has also been on the decline: Only half of households gave in 2018, compared with two thirds in 2000.One likely reason for the disparity between Latinos and other donors can be traced to the lack of economic growth for Hispanics, who are the country’s second largest ethnic group. The average income for Latino households has stayed largely flat from 2000 to 20...Protected: Dementia care is ‘an immediate demographic imperative,’ says RTI International expert
